TRICHOMONADS  IN  BALF  IN  THE  COURSE  OF
ACUTE  RESPIRATORY  DISTRESS  SYNDROME
( ARDS  and  TRICHOMONAS )

During human ARDS, after several days of evolution, amoeboid trichomonadins can often be observed by microscopic examination of the alveolar lavage fluid.

If this parasitic superinfection appears secondarily, it is not excluded that it plays a role in the aggravation of pulmonary lesions or in the delay of healing.

This remains to be proven, but recent studies provide arguments in favor of this hypothesis  (Jiang et al., 2024;  Hong et al., 2024)

This surimposed infection by a parasite is documented here by a gallery of micrographs.

If trichomonads infections occur frequently
in the course of "common" ARDS,
facing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic,
one can raise the question of their role
as surimposed infection during COVID-19.
